Paul Mariner assesses whether or not London is losing something as clubs leave famous old stadiums for brand new homes. Tottenham have asked the EFL board for permission to play their Carabao Cup third-round tie in Milton Keynes after being drawn at home against Watford. Spurs are due to host Javi Gracia's Hornets in the week commencing Sept. 24. But their new stadium will not be ready by then and Wembley -- where the north Londoners are playing their home fixtures for now -- is unavailable on the dates in question. Manchester United‘s woes continued this past Monday night, after the Red Devils succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

What irked United fans perhaps more than the defeat was the fact that despite playing well in the first half, the team was unable to take the lead and get a distinct advantage.

This was mentioned time and again by manager Jose Mourinho during his post-match interview and press conference, where the Portuguese boss highlighted his side’s dominance in the first period without anything to show for it.

What made the news, however, was his somewhat trademark rant at the end of the press conference, where the 55-year-old demanded respect for being the manager with the most Premier League titles in the league, more than all the other current managers combined.

An Inside Source Reveals What Man United Players Think About Mourinho’s Future

There were questions raised over the former Chelsea boss’ future at Manchester United as well as the unity of the team during this trying period.

Despite the rumours that French legend Zinedine Zidane is on his way to replace Mourinho at Old Trafford, the Mancunian club’s goalkeeper David De Gea decided to let his own emotions out via a Twitter post that should give fans of the historic club some relief during this tough time.

De Gea posted a picture of the team with the caption: “United now more than ever.” Fans have been speculating about the dressing room’s reaction to the two successive defeats, and amid reports of a rift between players and manager, this post from De Gea does put things into perspective.

The Spaniard has been average lately, even if that doesn’t do his talent justice, conceding seven goals in three matches after winning the golden glove award last season.

His own future has been questioned several times, but it looks as if the custodian is satisfied in Manchester despite the problems at the English giants.

What Paul Pogba Had To Say About United’s Defeat To Tottenham

Reuters/Jason Cairnduff

Manchester United fans were left flabbergasted on Monday, as their side suffered a 3-0 loss to Tottenham, bringing their total tally to three points in three games this campaign.

This is particularly worrisome, as the Red Devils played really well in the first half and almost had a chance to go one up, and were expected to be the better side in the second half.

However, a quick goal from Harry Kane and a decisive brace from Lucas Moura sealed the three points in favor of Spurs. Clearly, United supporters weren’t the only ones surprised by the results.

Paul Pogba revealed the following after the match (RMC Sport): “‘Even we don’t understand. We started the game really well, and we concede two goals in the second half. That was tough to take.”

He went on to add: “The first goal, we did not understand, because we had the match in our hands. One goal, two goals… we continued to push, we had chances, and then we concede the third. Our fans were still pushing us. We are really sorry for them, and really disappointed, we wanted to do better.”

A sentiment that is bound to be felt by most Red Devils was echoed by the French midfielder, as he concluded: “I think that this is a defeat that we did not deserve. When you want something… football can be cruel.

“We just have to bounce back. It will not be easy but it is only the beginning of the season. We are going to continue, you should not be worried. We are Manchester United and we will never give up.”

United next face Burnley on Sunday, which will be an away game that fans, players, and Jose Mourinho alike will be desperate to win, and in resounding fashion.

WATCH: Wayne Rooney Continues His Incredible MLS Form With Stunning Freekick

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Wayne Rooney is well and truly back in the game. The former Manchester United striker is making headlines around the world for his stunning performances in a DC United shirt barely a few months after deciding to take on a new challenge in the MLS.

The former English international came to the fore a few days ago after a mind-blowing series of events during the latter stages of a match against Orlando.

Rooney was seen performing a perfect tackle as the last man, and then magnificently set up the winner for his teammate with a cross-field ball that would have made Paul Scholes proud.

After that sensational display, the 32-year-old has now starred yet again for DC United against Portland Timbers, by scoring two brilliant goals and leading the team to a comprehensive 4-1 victory.

.@WAYNEROONEY WITH A BEAUTY! 😍 #DCvPOR https://t.co/5nyftQ74ZZ

— Major League Soccer (@MLS) August 16, 2018

One of the two goals came from a superb free-kick from about 25 yards out. Rooney managed to get a lot of whip and curl on the dead ball, resulting in a marvelous finish which had the goalkeeper diving to no avail.

Rooney’s contributions to the MLS side since joining have been simply staggering, as they have helped the club jump from 9 points out of a possible 36 to a much improved 13 points from a possible 21.

What’s more, DC United now have their playoff hopes alive in the Eastern Conference of MLS, thanks to the major contributions of England’s top-scorer.

Several fans and supporters of the striker-turned-midfielder took to social media to commend the efforts of Rooney, with many referring to the phrase ‘still got it’.

With a performance like this, there is perhaps no doubt that Rooney is still one of the most influential footballers in the world, even though his legs aren’t quite the way they were ten years ago. His heart is most definitely still in the game.

The ambition of players knows no bounds in the modern era. Most talents are aware that if a club doesn’t make apt use of their services, a transfer can always be forced one way or another.

While this is increasingly common with big names and high-quality players, those individuals who sincerely believe that a big move is theirs can also make use of this route.

And it now appears that this is what one Crystal Palace player seems eager to do, with a move that will better his position in London. As per Mirror, Wilfried Zaha is keen on departing Palace this window, and could put in an official transfer request soon.

The report believes that Chelsea is the destination that the 25-year-old prefers, and he has allegedly told his teammates the same. But Palace will only sanction a move if a huge offer arrives from the Premier League giants.

Further, it is reported that Zaha has rejected the club’s advance at renewing his contract and bettering the package he currently earns, with fresh terms giving him up to £125,000-a-week, a decent step-up from a recent contract he signed that sees him earn £100,000-a-week currently.

The Ivory Coast international had a spell to forget at Manchester United, where loan spells and bench time frustrated him.

Zaha’s performances were crucial in giving Palace some much-needed confidence in the Premier League, having scored 9 goals and created 3 more last season despite being plagued by injury.

As of such, the Eagles may not be too keen on letting him go, but a personal desire can speak volumes these days, particularly if Chelsea too, are interested.
