If you are a Manchester United supporter, you’ll be all but aware of the summer saga that went down regarding the transfer of Antoine Griezmann. Until deadline day, a move was thought to be all but done, but instead, it came crashing down due to factors that have been dusted and discussed already.
However, due to the things that the Spanish giants have set their minds to doing in the coming summer, a repeat of the same could be at hand.
According to AS, for a short period of time in the summer window, the release clause on Griezmann will be lowered from €200 million (£176 million) to €100 million (£88.2 million).
It is understood that this shall be done due to the Frenchman’s dismal form from the start of the season, that has seen him find the back of the net just twice so far. This is far beneath the potential that would be expected of the 26-year-old.
Despite the new development, it was understood that United would make a bid regardless. The reduced price will make them all the more eager to try and secure the services of the forward. However, what the ploy will do is bring more deals to the table, which might be precisely what Atletico Madrid require.
The potential of squeezing the most profit out of an out-of-form player is an art that European clubs have perfected over the seasons.
With Barcelona interested as well, Jose Mourinho will not have an easy time prying his main target away. It is interesting to note that by doing this, Madrid haven’t precisely opened the doors to the Premier League club, but rather kept the player open to other offers.
All in all, it will be interesting to see if the condition stands should Griezmann recover from his poor spell by the time the next summer transfer window reopens.
