When it comes to transfer windows, more and more often it appears that clubs are more inclined towards proving their financial prowess rather than making smart and economical bargains.

As a result, we have windows filled with underrated players going for insanely high sums, and European powerhouses willingly splashing the cash for these individuals.

Now, the amount that Manchester United will be given to invest in the upcoming winter window has been revealed, and it will be one that will raise several eyebrows.

According to The Sun, Ed Woodward has assigned £80 million for Jose Mourinho to spend in an effort to better the club’s chances at trumping their neighbors Manchester City to the Premier League title.

The report cited an Old Trafford source to have revealed: “Jose met with some of the clubs top brass including Woodward last week and could have a pretty penny to spend. It sounds like some of the summer budget is being advanced into January.”

It is understood that the positions the Portuguese boss is most eager to fill are those of a left-back, an attacking winger, and a creative no.10 player.

The report also added: “Jose is also looking to get rid of some players. Shaw and Darmian are in the firing line. There’s a few key positions he wants to fill throughout the squad.”

Now, it certainly appears that the Mancunian giants mean business, and will go into the window all guns blazing. However, the stated amount does require some critical thought.

Looking into the inflation that the enormous summer transfers brought into the market, what can United realistically hope to bring for that amount?

Although £80 million would have a couple of years ago brought a minimum of two world-class players, judging by the current trend, United will be lucky to land the likes of Danny Rose and one substandard overhyped youngster for the No.10 role.

However, till the window gets going, one can never fully tell what is the true depth of Mourinho’s war plans.
