Clubs often tend to play the long game when it comes to those transfer targets who really appear to be worth it.

While in the past, a simple no or a breakdown in talks would discourage even powerhouses from pursuing their deals any further, these days, entire windows go past and multiple seasons are involved before certain sagas come to fruition.

Of course, the effect goes both ways, as parent clubs who are aware of the interest that their players may attract now tend to offer bumper extensions to their contracts – a brave effort at warding off temptations to switch.

Now, one Manchester United target is on the receiving end of such a ploy.

Harry Maguire has signed a five-year extension to his contract with Leicester City. The English centre-back, who was integral in the nation’s relatively successful World Cup run, emerged as a hot target for Manchester United late into the summer transfer window.

With the Foxes adamant at not selling their star-man, it was expected that the Red Devils would pursue the 25-year-old once more in the winter window.

The Reds, having failed at meeting Jose Mourinho’s transfer requests and their below-par start to the season, all pointed in favor of such a deal occurring.

However, that now seems like a highly unlikely possibility, especially considering United’s recent history with playing hardball with price tags.

Maguire had this to say about staying on with the Foxes: “Ever since I came to this club, I’ve always reiterated how good they’ve been to me.

“They gave me an opportunity to play in the Premier League and built a great platform for me to go and perform at the World Cup. I owe them a lot and I’m looking forward to the future.”

He is expected to play every minute of the Premier League campaign this season as well, and his skill-set certainly assures that Leicester have made a sound choice.
