As admirers of the beautiful game, most of us have tried our hands at playing with our favourite players on EA Sports’ FIFA – an annually released interactive football game that just adds up better features during its every iteration.

However, it seems as if the fans most likely won’t be witnessing the release of FIFA 19, as Andrew Wilson, the CEO of EA, has revealed that his company plans to discontinue the yearly release of a new game.

Wilson believes a new purchase every year is a thing of the past, and proposes the idea of moving on to subscription-based updates that will be done entirely online. This means that new features, squads, kits etc. will be added on through online updates, saving customers their usual trip to a store or the bother of ordering a CD online.

“There’s a world where it gets easier and easier to move that code around, where we may not have to do an annual release,” Wilson told Bloomberg. “We can really think about those games as a 365-day, live service.”

Though this makes getting possession of the widely loved game somewhat easier, it further puts the future price ranges of the new iterations into the air. This also would mean that the user would require a stable and constant internet connection to even install it on their systems.

This method was merely proposed, however, and has not yet been made official yet. Whilst the proposal would most likely be received with positivity, the actual implementation could take a couple of years.

Have had two addictions in life- playing football and watching football. Usually described as introverted but not when it comes to speaking and writing about the beautiful game of football.
